IPAF Outrigger Calculator: the Ready Reckoner
Date:
Monday, June 25, 2012

This “simple interactive tool” allows users to determine the size of the spreader plates required when setting up boom lifts with outriggers. Using the weight of the vehicle, the Ready Reckoner then provides details of the correct spreader plate size depending on soil types and ground strength.
The tool is not, however, to be used in place of a proper visual inspection or geotechnical surveys, and ground assessments should always be carried out before the MEWP is used. Usually a visual assessment is all that is needed in situations where outrigger loads are likely to be low, and the Ready Reckoner is a handy assistant to help you determine the safest way to set up your powered access equipment.
Why Use Spreader Plates?
The foot of an outrigger is comparatively small compared to the weight it is bearing, and can create high levels of pressure on the ground. In areas where the ground is potentially weak, such as rough/loose terrain, or paved areas above open spaces such as tunnels or subways, spreader plates help to ‘spread the load’ and provide a safer foundation for the MEWP.
Because it is sometimes impossible to determine ground conditions, IPAF advises that spreader plates should be used whenever outriggers are used.
You can find out more about the campaign at the IPAF website, and use the Ready Reckoner tool online.
